For Christmas, my dear wife got me a couple of polishes from Serious Performance and the Finish Kare sample kit. Clever lass ... best present, with a Guinness gift pack from our daughter a very close second Mr. Green

Getting the products proved a little problematic, since an order placed on the 18th and delivered by private courier had not arrived by Christmas Eve ... and had still not arrived by the 29th. Good old Alex at Serious Performance simply sent me another package by Royal Mail on the 30th (which arrived the very next day ... well done Royal Mail) along with a couple of extras, one of which was the much spoken about Finish Kare 1000P Hi-Temp Sealant which comes in the form of a paste in a little tin.

I had intended to try out this kit on my white car, except for the Finish Kare 2685 Pink Wax which delivers depth ... and I don't like depth on the white car; I like bright glossiness. The Finish Kare 2685 Pink Wax was destined for the black car and the Finish Kare 1000P Hi-Temp Sealant came as such a welcome surprise that I decided to try out both on the black car and give the paint a final spritz down with the much praised Finish Kare 425 Ultra-Slick Poly Wipe Spray Detailer.

... which I cleaned up with some Autobright Dry Wash, which is a waterless wash with a little polish in there and presumably some carnauba in there.

I had read what a pain this product is to remove, but that was not my experience. I used a yellow foam applicator which was wiped into the surface of the sealant. The sealant is very hard indeed and while it does melt with a finger rubbed into the top it seems quite hard to get any out of the tin - a hard sealant, indeed. That said, a very little goes a very long way and I applied a thin layer across the panel with great ease - the sealant spread really well and did not dry out part way through application. This sealant cures very quickly and buffing off after only a couple of minutes was really easy, too.

What do Finish Kare say about the product?

So, low cleaning which is good for layering and using on top of a layered set of products but not a great depth, made up for by high gloss, strong protection and long durability. I have read that a perfect partner to this sealant is the 2685 Pink Wax, which delivers a depth over the top.

Again, I found this wax of very much the same behaviour to apply and remove. The smell of both is quite chemically, but not unpleasant; more like reasonably pleasant furniture wax.

What do Finish Kare say about the product?

Again, low cleaning which is good for layering (and notice that Finish Kare recommend layering this product), high gloss and depth but protection and durability is not as good as the underlying paste sealant. I'll get another couple of layers down over the coming couple of days. I can't say I noticed much increase in depth, but maybe that will become more apparent in due course and with more layers. It is certainly a bright, glossy look which I normally do not like on the black car (preferring deep, oily blackness to glossiness) but this seems to work well.

For fun, I cleaned up the bonnet with Autobright Dry Wash and then spritzed the panel over with Finish Kare 425 Ultra-Slick Poly Wipe Spray Detailer.

This product came out in a very fine mist and four or five pumps was sufficient for the bonnet. I wiped it in front/back stripes on the bonnet and then buffed it off. Easy enough ;-) Again, I'm not sure on the the looks or the feel above my favourite QD, Lucas Slick Mist, but maybe black is not the best colour to reveal its best - it's certainly okay and I'll know more about it after some rain and a couple more uses.

Nice, eh? While the photographs do look much the same and are really just a nice set of pictures of those trees over the road reflected in the paint, what I hoped to show off was the brightness of the finish.

... one last thing ...

I wanted to try out the polishes from Serious Performance and moved over to the white car. The Fine Cut and Finishing Polishes were both very good - I say that, but I don't have a huge experience of polishes Embarassed

I worked by hand and used a white terry applicator (one of those with a pocket from Halfords, I think) and picked the boot since it has the most obvious scratches that can be seen easily. I'm afraid I was unable to photograph the process, but I will say that after a couple of hits of the Fine Cut, the boot was dramatically improved and scratches still present but very much visually diminished. The Fine Cut could be heard on the paint and had a long work time, not drying out, able to be spread over the whole panel and worked hard for a good couple of minutes after which the sound of the abrasiveness in the polish died off. A lovely creaking finish was left by this polish, bright and reflective paint. Grey in colour, the Finishing polish was much wetter and could not be heard on the paint - I noticed some moisture coming out on the paint and it spread well and again, was able to be massaged into the paint for a good couple of minutes.

I have a more grand plan for the white car, which will involve polishing the whole car with the Fine Cut polish and then splitting the car straight down the middle for a Serious Performance finishing polish, cleanse and sealant on one side versus Finish Kare 303 Foam Pad Glaze and 2180 Ultra Poly Wipe Sealant on the other side. The whole car will then be finished with 1000P Hi-Temp Sealant with half of the bonnet and half of the roof further layered with 2685 Pink Wax across both product finishes. The car will be washed with the 118SC Super Concentrate Shampoo.

For now, I just wanted to see what the 1000P is like after a simple polish. The photograph does not quite capture it, but I was astonished how bright and glossy the resulting finish was:

I must say, I was a little sceptical about these products but tried to keep an open mind. I get the feeling I'll prefer just this finish to one with a layer of 2685 Pink Wax over the top, but we'll see when I get the whole car dealt with as described above. This is glossier than I remember Duragloss 601/105, which I was very impressed with indeed and more reflective than I recall Chemical Guys Jetseal 109 being - I'll try to find time to qualify those sentiments with some comparison patches of the other products, likewise versus Collinite 476S.

I've had some fun ... a little time and perhaps some rain will tell me a lot more about whether I like these products, but first impressions are very positive indeed.
